I was inspired to write this article by a sad story told me be executive of one factory who went to the local electronic store (according the advice of foreign equipment suppliers) in order to buy the missing number of RFID tags. And, of course, he was surprised and, perhaps, also the staff of the store to this strange customer's order.
So, this article has been written to clarify this issue and simplify the purchase of RFID tags. This article also will have and an additional information as the value-added resellers in Russia and the CIS, as well as manufacturers will provide me by details. For simplicity, we consider only the mass-marketed products - passive RFID tags.
It is assumed that the reader of this article is a little bit informed on what RFID tags are and what is its application.
Guidance on RFID tags selection
- First of all it is necessary to determine the type of tag that you need: HF - high frequency (13.56 MHz frequency, which has a spiral antenna, similar to the transit contactless card), UHF - ultra high frequencies (860-960 MHz).
- Find out what chip is necessary for your application. Typically, the solution provider will tell you what chip will solve your problem the best way. If you already have tags and you need the same ones - try to find out the specification.
- Decide on the size and form factor of the tags. They can tag the documents or boxes or CDs. For sure, they will differ depending on the application. Therefore to make the right choice you must take into attention the tasks you want to solve.
- The presence or absence of the adhesive layer and its type. Tags can be glued to the surface and can simply be put into the package. If it is a valuable and rare books, the tag must be able to be removed without damaging of the book itself.
