RST-Invent: plans for domestic production of RFID tags and ICs

In anticipation of the next few years the spread of RFID solutions for the Russian businesses, the Supervisory Board of RUSNANO and Board of Directors of "Systematic Group" JSC approved development of the project for a domestic manufacturing of RFID tags - LLC "RST-Invent". As contribution by the "Systematic" LLC served patents, utility models and developments. JSC "Rusnano" on its part has provided funding for the development of a joint project in the amount of 190 million rubles ($ 3.3 mln.) with a total project budget of 630 million rubles ($ 21 mln.).

The main purpose of the company's founders was to create a national company - the manufacturer and developer of UHF RFID chips compatible to standard EPC class 1 gen.2 based on 90 nm technology and production of UHF RFID tags based on the technology.

However, the project must launch not with the design of chips, but with the production of several types of tags based on domestic and imported antennas and the latest generation of NXP chips SL3ICS1002/1202, NXP SL3S1203/1213 (G2iL/G2iL +), Alien Higgs3, Impinj Monza3 from the world's leading manufacturers of RFID equipment such as NXP, Alien and Impinj.

The new production facility will be located in Vsevolozhsk area near St. Petersburg and its launch is planned for late 2011 - early 2012. The basis of the chip installation process and tags production will be the most modern equipment based on automated production lines from leading manufacturers of equipment for the production of tags.

In the same time with the launch of production of tags on imported chips the company will continue work on developing and preparing to launch domestic production of RFID chips. RFID chips are the next generation EPC standard class 1 gen.2 based on 90nm technology will be put into production at domestic plants after the development process of 90 nm. This technology is new with respect to RFID, provides a breakthrough reduction in the size, power consumption and cost of chips.

The new chips will be used for the development of new and also for the upgrading of existing labels, for example, PatchTag ™ RFID tags, which already has a leading range of passive reading among of generic tags. Using a new generation of domestic chip for these tags will significantly improve their technical specs. There will be created other tag designs, specifically targeting for the use of a new chip. For example, a family of tags iNano, which includes BiblioTag, LogTag and DrugTag, provide an effective combination of reading and writing range through the original antenna design with high gain and 90-nm IC.

It is expected that the main areas of the application of this products will be warehousing and transportation logistics, retail, tagging of the library and archive collections, supply chain management. Russian origin of the chips also will simplify their use in the public sector, including law enforcement agencies.

In this article we give a brief announcement of the company's plans to produce new spectrum of RFID tags for use in various sectors of economic for the period 2011-2013.

Total company plans to manufacture seven types of tags: 5 wet inlay tags and 2 hard-cased tags for read on metal.

It is easy to note that products are designed for use in virtually all areas of economic - from the automation of inventory and accounting, as libraries and archives, as well as in retail, to automate accounting and identification of vehicles, industrial automation and control of authenticity of goods. In the future the company plans to expand its range of products in line with the growing and expanding demand for tags in the emerging Russian market RFID applications.

Among the most interesting company's developments we'd like to tell more detailed about the following. PatchTag NG (abbreviation «NG» stands for «New Generation») is a development of the ideas incorporated in the PatchTag. With smaller size and much simpler and cheaper manufacturing process, it is not inferior by its features to its predecessor, a leader in read/write range among of analogs, what has been confirmed by independent testing laboratory of the European Competence Center. High gain achieved by the unique design of the antenna provides greater range of tag reading. The design allows its placement on the metal surfaces without substantial reduction of the communication range.

DrugTag optimized for tagging of drugs in glass packaging. Antenna design ensures a confident tag communication in the near and far zones when tagging of dry pharmaceutical mixtures and reliable reading of the tag in the near zone (30 cm) when tagging of liquid solutions.

BiblioTag marketed for marking of library and archives collections. Can also be used for tagging of items in logistics management. It is assumed that it will replace the now widely used for the same purpose Rafsec Gen2 ShortDipole Wet Inlay tags, Global UHF C1G2 EPC a production of UPM RFID company (former Raflatac).

Small size of MMT tag (36x11x3 mm) and the possibility of its placement on metal surfaces, allows to use this tag for labeling of fixed assets. Reading range up to 2.8 m in conjunction to its relatively small size provides by a high sensitivity chip and the antenna of the original design.

SML-M3 tag has been specifically designed for covert placement in a special indent on the surface of metal items. It is designed for tagging of metal seals. Being immersed in a special indent in the metal to a depth of 2 mm and filled in with composite resin up to the brim with the surface, the tag is able to communicate the reader up to 3 mm, being hidden from detection and reliably protected from the damaging effects. The same tag can be used to tag the most important documents or tax stamps, for example. Let's note that at this time - it is the world's smallest UHF tag.

Almost all company's tags have a long communication range (with the exception of engineered solutions for a certain number of tasks by SML-M3), provided by a combination of antenna design and high sensitivity ICs such as NXP SL3ICS1002/1202, NXP SL3S1203/1213 (G2iL/G2iL +), Alien Higgs3, Impinj Monza3. The volume of user memory will be 512 bits and the length of the identifier (EPC ID) - 96/240 bit. All developed by the company tags meet the EPC Global Class 1 Gen2 ISO 18000-6C standard.

Company's experts predict to developing and launching domestic production of a IC's new generation will allow significantly improve the performance produced tags without changing of the production line. There is a company's strong intention to capture over the next 3-5 years a significant portion of the UHF RFID tags domestic market over their imported counterparts due to higher performance specs and also because of their lower cost on the domestic market.
